Pool Deck Construction & Resurfacing

Cool-deck finishes, stamped concrete, and pool surrounds engineered for chlorine, sun, and bare feet.

Pool decks have a job description no other concrete has: stay cool under bare feet, resist chlorine and pool-shock chemistry, hold up to constant wet-dry cycling, and provide non-slip footing for kids and adults. We pour and resurface pool decks across Clear Lake, the Galveston Bay area, and south Houston with cool-deck finishes, stamped patterns, and integral colors that handle the Gulf Coast UV and the chemical environment around a swimming pool.

The most common pool deck failure we see is sealer breakdown from chlorine and shock chemistry — the deck looks gray, dusty, and slippery when wet. Resurfacing with a cool-deck overlay restores the surface, adds heat reflection (15-20°F cooler than plain concrete in full sun), and uses pool-grade sealers built for chemistry exposure.

What You Can Expect

Cool-Deck Finishes

Reflective surfaces that stay 15-20°F cooler than plain concrete.

Chlorine-Resistant Sealers

Pool-grade sealers that won't break down from shock chemistry.

Slope Away from Coping

Engineered drainage so water doesn't pool against your pool deck.

Non-Slip Textures

Broom finishes and texture mats for wet-foot safety.

Deep Dive

Why Texas Strong Concrete for Pool Decks

The Clear Lake / Galveston Bay area has more residential pools per capita than most Texas metro areas — the climate runs pool-friendly nine months of the year, and many of the master-planned communities (Tuscan Lakes, Mar Bella, Shadow Creek Ranch) include pools as a near-default amenity. We've built pool decks in most of these communities and have a deep familiarity with what works locally: cool-deck reflective finishes, integral color for permanent appearance, pool-grade sealers, and structural design that handles the wet-dry cycling pools create.

The fundamental design challenge with pool decks is that the pool itself is a rigid concrete shell, while the deck around it is a flexible slab on grade. Where they meet — the bond beam — needs an expansion joint that lets the deck move relative to the pool without cracking. We engineer this joint with backer rod and polyurethane sealant on every pool deck pour, and we re-seal it every 3-5 years as part of maintenance. The single most common pool deck failure is a degraded bond beam joint that lets water get under the slab.

Surface finish for pool decks does three jobs simultaneously: thermal reflection, traction, and aesthetics. Cool-deck finishes (textured polymer-modified coatings with reflective pigments) handle the first two and add color to the third. Stamped concrete with integral color adds high-end appearance but is slightly less reflective than cool deck. We often combine the two — stamped pattern in the main field, cool-deck finish near the water where bare feet are on it most. Broom finish (parallel texture lines) is the budget option and works fine for utility pool decks.

For resurfacing existing pool decks, the polymer-modified overlay process is identical to the patio overlay process with one addition: we use pool-grade sealers (acrylic or polyurea, rated for chlorine and shock chemistry) instead of the standard concrete sealers we'd use on a driveway. Pool-grade sealers cost about 50% more but they're necessary; standard sealers break down within 1-2 years in pool chemistry. We can also retrofit cool-deck thermal reflection onto an existing deck — the overlay itself contains reflective pigments and the integral color is light-toned to bounce heat.

One thing we DON'T do: we don't pour pool decks during the pool construction phase if the pool builder's shell isn't fully cured. The pool shell needs 28 days of cure before we can pour the deck around it, otherwise the rigid-flexible movement starts immediately and the bond beam joint can't compensate. If your pool builder is rushing the deck pour, push back. Or just hire us for the deck and we'll coordinate timing with them. Call (833) TSC-CONC to discuss your pool deck — new build or resurface.

When This Helps

When Pool Decks Is the Right Choice

Common situations where homeowners across Texas reach out to us.

You're building a new pool and need the surround poured

New pool decks coordinate with the pool builder on coping, expansion joint, and bond beam. We've worked alongside most major pool builders in the area.

Your existing pool deck is hot, faded, or slippery

Cool-deck resurfacing addresses all three at once — texture for grip, reflective surface for cooler temps, fresh color and sealer.

Your pool deck has cracked from soil movement

Pool decks crack along the bond beam more than other decks because of the rigid pool shell. We repair properly with expansion joint resealing and structural epoxy where needed.

You want decorative stamped or stained pool deck

Stamped pool decks with cool-deck color and texture combine style with the practical pool deck requirements.

You're adding a new section to an existing pool deck

Tying new concrete into an existing pool deck takes careful joint placement to keep water from migrating into the soil under the pool.

FAQ

Common Questions About Pool Decks

What is cool deck and why does it matter in Texas?+

Cool deck is a concrete finish that reflects more solar radiation than standard concrete, staying 15-20°F cooler under direct sun. It's textured for grip when wet and colored throughout. In Texas summer sun, a plain concrete pool deck can hit 130°F+ — too hot to walk on barefoot. Cool deck stays comfortable.

How long does pool deck resurfacing last?+

10-15 years for a quality polymer-modified overlay with proper sealing and maintenance. Plain concrete pool deck (no overlay) typically needs cosmetic attention every 5-7 years and structural attention every 15-20 years.

Do you handle the pool coping?+

Yes. Coping is the cap on the pool wall edge. We install travertine, brick, or formed-concrete coping during a new deck pour. For resurfacing projects, we work around existing coping or replace it if needed.

How do you prevent slipping when the deck is wet?+

Texture. Cool-deck finishes have a textured surface (looks like fine sandpaper). Broom finishes have parallel texture lines. Both meet ADA non-slip requirements when wet. We can add additional anti-slip aggregate to the sealer for extra grip.

Can chlorine damage concrete pool decks?+

Yes, over time. Chlorine and pool-shock chemicals (chlorine + pH balancer + calcium hardness adjusters) attack concrete and sealers if splashed and not rinsed. We use pool-grade sealers that resist this chemistry, and we recommend rinsing after shock treatments.

What does pool deck cost in our area?+

New pool deck (around a new pool): $9-14 per square foot for plain broom; $12-18 for cool deck; $14-22 for stamped. Resurfacing existing deck: $5-9 per square foot for cool-deck overlay; $7-12 for stamped overlay.
